Home+Grown Dipstick

We’re starting a new series called Home+Grown. Where one of Your Car Care REPs will walk you through a do it yourself maintenance, upgrade or car care procedure to your vehicle. Today Your Car Care REP “Lenny” will discuss how changing your own car oil can put some change back in your pocket. So get ready to whip out your dipstick in the next episode of Home+Grown.

With today’s modern engines being more advanced than ever, a lot of people have shied away from doing basic maintenance, and have opted for a service station to render these services. Knowing how to change your car oil is worth the invested knowledge. You can save on 75% off of what you would spend at a service station. Let’s first talk about your engine oil purpose. Engine oil is used to reduce friction and helps cool down your engine block. Depending on your vehicle manufacture’s oil type, your car may take synthetic oil. If it does, use synthetic oil only. Your cars oil should be changed between 3000-5000 miles on average (or the manufacture’s recommendation). The following are tools you will need today in the Home+Grown shop. They are easy to use and are essential to do an oil change.

Latex Gloves
1 Jack / 2 Jack Stands
4-5 Quarts of oil (Preferred or Manufacture Recommended)
New oil filter (Preferred or Manufacture Recommended)
Funnel
17mm socket or ratchet
Oil Pan
Oil filter wrench

*Make sure your cars engine is cool before attempting any oil changes
**Latex gloves will protect your skin from coming in contact with oil

1) Remove the oil cap from your engine then jack up the car. Use 2 Jack stands to secure car in place.

2) Use a socket ratchet wrench to loosen and remove the cars oil pan plug

3) Place your oil pan in position.

4) While the oil drains into your oil pan remove the old oil filter. You should be able to remove it by hand. If you can’t, use your oil wrench. Strap it in place give it a nice tug and it should twist off.

5) Open your new oil filter and place some fresh oil along the rubber seal before you place it onto engine. Hand tighten new oil filter in place. Don’t use too much force to put in place.

6) Now all your oil should have emptied out into your oil pan. Replace your oil pan plug back in place using your socket wrench. Make sure all oil is emptied out by checking your dipstick.

7) Place your funnel into your engine oil opening. Pour 4-5 quarts of oil into engine. Jack down your ride.

8) Tighten the oil cap. Check your dipstick level & make sure there is enough oil in your engine. Start your engine & let run for 2-3 minutes. This allows the new oil to circulate throughout your engine.

9) Check your dipstick again. Is the level good? If so you’re like Elephant Man says “Good to Go!!” This is Your Car Care REP “Lenny” with this edition of Home+Grown.
